An early Texas flag with a most visible warning to the Mexicans who were threatening a Texas garrison in 1835 at Gonzales was ''Come and Take It.'' On a white field, painted in black, was a five-pointed star, a cannon barrel, and the famous words, ''Come and Take It.'' In addition to being the first battle flag of the Texas Revolution, it was also the first Texas banner unfurled in a successful battle against the Mexicans.
