New Orleans furnished two companies of volunteers in the fight for Texas independence, and the members of these groups of young men were known as the 'New Orleans Grays.' The flag of the New Orleans Grays was bright blue on which appeared the inscription: 'First Company of Texan Volunteers, from New Orleans.' An eagle carried in it's beak a streamer on which appeared the words: 'God & Liberty.' The New Orleans Gray was also flying over the Alamo at the time of its fall.
